My latest piece of recorded music. It took over six months to produce. What started out as a single, turned into a three song EP, which evolved into the five songs on the record now.
I would like to thank my producing partner Shachar Bousanni. All of the wonderful players and singers featured on this record. David. Andy. Lissa. Cassidy. Ned. Claire. Kim. Adam. My wonderful Sara. Scott Simock for the album artwork. My family. The ones that guide me. The Source that knows me. All of you who have supported me through the years. And anyone with a heart willing to really listen to these songs.
Here and Now tells the story of letting go of the past, accessing your infinite nature, and diving into the gift that is the Now. It is about faith. Faith in the ability we all have to set ourselves free. I don’t need religion to pray. I have music. I have my heart. I have my voice. This EP connects me to the understanding that love is our highest expression as human beings.
This song is about finding that place within you where you trust yourself wholly. When you know your purpose you have the ability to handle anything that comes your way, so why worry?
Be confident enough to accept the things you cannot control. Be brave enough to take action towards what you want to see. Be flexible enough to take it as it comes. So often we try and get ahead of ourselves, that’s when the worry creeps in.
The media is spreading fear and separation: the rich are getting richer as the poor suffer, politicians are corrupt, capitalism is destroying the world, you are being fed lies constantly, you are told you have no power, money does not lead to happiness but being broke sucks. Amidst all of that you can know who you are, you can discover what you are, you can decide what you stand for and take action. You have more power than you know.
This doesn’t mean ignoring the darker aspects of life or denying the bad stuff. This definitely does not mean turning away from the hard truths we have to face. This does not mean avoiding pain. Find your strength. Accept what is. And stand for what could be. It starts with you.
Your life is your story. And guess what? You are the author. You can write it how you want it. Be creative. Use your imagination. Are you telling yourself you are a prisoner or a hero facing obstacles on the way to victory? Are you telling yourself you are a loner or a team player who just hasn’t found his team yet? Are you telling yourself you are different from your role models or that we are all capable of greatness? You can change your story, and no matter how hard they may try to be, no one else is the author of your life. Write what you want.
Now. Do I still worry sometimes? Yes. Of course. And that’s okay. When I do, I sing this song and remember I am free when I say so, I am brave if I choose to be, and I can handle anything.
When you are not in a constant state of worry, you can breathe. You can slow down. You can begin to get in touch with your heart.
Do you have a special place that makes you feel peaceful? More connected to all that is? Is it church? A mosque? A meadow? Grandma’s house?
I have found special places. They have changed over the years. A place that once made me feel more in touch with my heart can sometimes lose its charge. It becomes just another place. Have you felt that before?
We are adaptable by nature, meaning we get used to things very quickly. Sometimes when we go to a particular place looking for a feeling that we once felt, it isn’t there any longer. It’s gone and we feel lost, like we are missing something.
The truth is, those places are just a physical reminder of something that is already within you. And me. We all have a temple within us. It is untouchable. It is always open. And it is eternal. You can go visit this temple whenever you want. You just have to slow down. Maybe close your eyes. Maybe put your hands over your heart. Arrive with humility. And open the door.
It doesn’t matter how crazy a day you’ve had. It doesn’t matter how mean that person was or how annoying that person was. It doesn’t matter how troubled your past was. It doesn’t matter how scary your future seems. If you want, you can walk through the doors to your own heart and remember that you are loved.
So wake up. Be open. Cultivate your love. And surrender to the mystery. If we could all see a bit more of the big picture, we would be humbled by it’s beauty. I mean, have you seen a picture of Earth from space? The solar system? Our galaxy? The Universe? What if your heart was that big? That connected? That beautiful? Could it be?
On the production side, this is the first time we merged organic with synthetic in such a prominent way. And I think we captured something. This is our world now.
Organic. Natural. But being blended with synthetic creations. When done in balance, I think it can be very beautiful.
Some songs don’t need words. The story is within the melody and the chords. The feeling is in the arrangement. We made this instrumental to reach that place beyond our words.
Dive, my friends. Let your feet leave the ground and dive into the depths of your heart.
Here and Now
The title track of this collection of songs, which has grown to be something I am very proud of.
This is our birthright. To be. Here and Now. In Love.
This does not mean without pain. Quite the opposite. To love deeply comes with pain as an aspect of it. And it is so worth it.
The present moment really is a gift. To feel. To hear. To experience. It is yours if you would just open yourself up to it. To the pain, the joy, the wonder. All of it. Everything this present moment has to offer you.
All that you have ever done, and has ever been done to you, is not happening right now. Not in this moment. Everything you are worried about, scared about, unsure about, is not happening right this instant.
If we could allow ourselves to really be here, instead of worrying about the future, or dwelling in the past. If we could allow ourselves to accept feelings of loneliness, instead of doing everything possible to avoid them. We might just have the realization that we are not alone. We are connected to each and every human being through their pain and love. We are connected to each and every human being through the shared experience that we are each playing a part in. We are all connected. We are all one.
The breath at the end of this musical statement, echoing something you may have heard before, but in a different time.
For this song I invite you to sit somewhere comfortable, close your eyes, and be with whatever you are feeling. Be with the music. Let go of all that has come before. And surrender to whatever will come after.
Let the song take you out.
